Pastors & Post-Pandemic Resilience

an initiative by the Long Beach Church Collective

Pastors are TIRED. OVERWHELMED. LONELY.
ON THE BRINK.

Nearly two out of five pastors in the United States say they have seriously considered quitting in the past year. More than one-third reported significant levels of burnout. Even locally, the numbers are staggering. Our pastors need our help.

For the past two-plus years, ministers have been pulled into crisis after crisis – none of which they were trained or prepared for. From a global pandemic to political tribalism to complex social issues, pastors have been expected to navigate a rapidly changing culture and to carry us along the way. And they’ve been faithful to answer. Our pastors have shepherded us through uncertain times, acutely aware of the critical eyes that watched every move and the anxious ears that scrutinized every explanation. The expectations, whether projected or assumed, have been impossible to bear.

Though the problem is significant and has no simple solutions, we believe that healing is possible for these men and women. And it starts with us; it is our time to carry them to Jesus when they need help. We are the friends who will support our pastors and find ways to bring them before the feet of Jesus so they might be restored.

The Long Beach Church Collective is working with others to connect pastors to the spiritual, emotional, and physical support they need for their long-term health and for the flourishing of God’s church. Through long-term and individualized support plans, pastors will reconnect to their passion and calling, renew their relationships, and remember their status as “be-loved” by God.

Together, we will help our pastors experience renewal and healing. We will help them rediscover rest and resilience. We will help them encounter the transformative presence of Jesus, take up their mats, and walk.

  • Pastors & Post-Pandemic Resilience is an attempt help our local pastors who are tired and overwhelmed after the last two+ years. We are going to connect pastors to the spiritual, emotional, and physical support needed for their long-term health and the flourishing of God’s church.

  • 100 pastors will participate in one of multiple 3-day kick-off retreats. Each pastors will have time to rest, work with counselors and fellow pastors to create a personalized resilience plan, and join a monthly peer group. Each pastor will then be given $1000 allowance to use for spiritual direction or counseling.

The plan also includes sabbatical support, an annual ‘Pastor in Residence’, board development, care for high-risk families, help for associate staff members, and money for a few parties.

  • We are raising $500,000. As of July 2022, we have raised $251,000.

  • Dr. Keith Douds (a local therapist) led a small team of pastors, counselors, and spiritual directors to develop the plan. Our team also conducted small groups in partnership with Rosemead School of Psychology (Biola) and CIFT (The Center For Individual And Family Therapy).

  • Absolutely. Click here to see the 20-page version of our plan.

  • Definitely, as long as it is good coffee. We would love to chat. You can email us here.
